A section entitled ‘Guidelines for interpreting my Rating System’ is included in all books which briefly explains my System.

Each season is in three sections, Package, Driver and Car, with the whole field rated and tabulated, and text discussing mainly the winners and the front-runners. My own illustrations are used, and reflect a spread of competitors for each season.

  1. Can someone explain the difference between each decade's Summaries and the Rating System: Explanatory Chapters 1894-2013? Does the larger volume include the ratings for individual drivers? Do the decade summaries include ratings that are comparable across decades?

    Thanks!

  2. Hello Doug, thank you for your enquiry. Patrick's daughter Catherine here.

The 'Explanatory Chapters' do not contain ratings for individual drivers, other than as examples. For a methodical presentation of individual driver-ratings, you would need to consult one of the 14 Season Summary volumes - one for each decade of motor racing.

The 'Explanatory Chapters' is a theoretical discussion of his Rating System - but it is illustrated by so many examples from racing history, it's as exciting to read as any novel! It's also essential for anyone wanting to learn more about the history of the sport, from an analytical perspective.

I am just about to release another volume in his Rating System set, which he titled 'Further Analysis'. This contains some novel statistics and new ways of looking at racing, as well as his acclaimed piece 'Six Criteria for Driver Dominance', which he updated in February, shortly before his death.

  3. Response to Doug Shulz continued:

    In Patrick's own words:

"I measure and score each season’s packages and cars in isolation. However the drivers I measure and score across seasons according to their careers. [For the decade summaries i.e., Season Summaries] [e]ach of the 113 seasons from 1894 to 2013 is presented in three sections: Package, Driver and Car. Each section consists of a rating-ranking table in simple, directly comparable arithmetic figures, followed by a brief explanatory text treating the front-runners."

His 'Explanatory Chapters' has a section titled '3.5.9 The limitations of comparing cross-era ratings' where he explains why it is impossible to directly compare drivers across eras, let alone rank them.

I hope this answers your questions.
